RWBY: Amity Arena, given the free game that it is, incorporates its own currency system, and a unique action penalty system. For the basic currencies, the game has two:

Premium Dust - The game's premium currency that you can trade to a lot of things including; Packs Liens, Bulk Crates, and Keys. Given the fact that it is the game's premium currency, obtaining a relatively useable quantity (the free way) would take quite a bit of grind. Nonetheless, the option to get it for free is there. The options on obtaining it includes performing missions, getting it from the Daily Bonus, checking your system mail and watching video ads, and through other on-going events.

Liens - this currency is mainly used when performing upgrades on your character cards. Additionally, you can use it in the shop to purchase specific character cards that are currently showcased there. Obtaining Liens in the game is quite easier compared to that of Premium Dust, as it is given to you every time you win a battle. Additionally, you can also get it from missions, event rewards, trading Premium Dust for it, as well as from surplus cards through the Academy (check the Academy section of the guide).

Regarding the game's action penalty system, the game does not necessarily limit you in performing battles. Since the game is PvP-centric, it is highly unlikely that they would limit players in performing battles as it would limit the availability of active competitors at any given time. Instead, what you'll miss is the chance to obtain a crate after winning a battle. Nonetheless, you'd still earn the Trophies and Liens. By default, you'll be given a gauge that can hold a maximum of 5 keys. Each time you win a game, a key is given to you to open a crate (which rewards you with a random card). "Keys" can be replenished every after 3 hours per unit. Otherwise, you'll have to spend 35 Premium Dust to instantly replenish it.

Another pre-requisite in performing upgrades in cards are copies of that pertaining card you want to actually upgrade (apart from the Liens). To get them, you can join an Academy and request them from the academy members. There isn't a fee to actually obtain them which is good -- however, the aid you get to receive is limited to 10 for a common type of card, and 1 aid for a rare type. Epic cards can't be requested from the academy. If you are not aiming for a specific card, purchasing the Bulk Crates is a good way to instantly earn multiple copies of a card in one go.
