Hook

The hook is a very important tool that you will use for most of your resource gathering. You start the game with it and the game teaches you how to use it so you should be good.

Wooden Hammer

The Wooden Hammer isn't really a tool since it really isn't actively used. It is more like a requirement for crafting some items but you don't actually use it. It just has to be in the inventory as you craft the item that requires it. It doesn't get used up if you craft something with it. You could remove it from your hotkey bar to free up space for some other more important things.

Wooden Spear

Your beginner weapon. The spear is used to stave off attacks from the infected and the shark who occasionally gnaws on your raft. In the case of the infected, it has a longer reach than them naturally. It does minimal damage to both enemies.

Fishing Rod

An important tool for early game since fish will probably be your food source early game. You have to be near the water to use it. Drop it in the water and wait for the fishing hook icon to turn orange and press the same button used to cast the line to draw the fish in.
