How to use essence for armors and items?

Use the same method you use for upgrade. That anvil. Click on upgrade and you'll see your essence along with runes. Choose your essence, then you'll see your neutral items(if you have any) choose your desired item to convert it.

Where is the anvil?

The anvil is in the shop. It is a dark grey object in the middle of the shop.
