Sometimes I see a player make his adjustment for the wind by using the rings and then he will move right back where he started his adjustment. He will make a great shot by doing this. How do you know to do this and why does it work?
What you’re seeing is called a “push” or “pull-back” adjustment. The player is lining up the wind adjustment with the rings, then moving the target back to the original spot so the ball goes where they first aimed. It works because they’ve already taken the wind into account by shifting with the rings. Putting the target back just keeps the shot aimed at the hole instead of off to the side.
