How can I use special attacks during HELAS ABYSS matches...opponents uses specias on me...not sure how to.

Up grade your hero and you get specials. In the upgrade screen have 4 or 6 specials (depend If you hero is legendary or not), the half is for PvP. Some gems also give some habilities (combo, hp drain etc).

How do you actually activate them? I have special skills but not way to use them it seems 0 0 REPORT

Only the bottom row of skills is meant for PvP (vs) and they're activated automatically by chance.The top row is only used for tower defense play.
