Apparently crowns mean nothing as far as points but people can see that the more elaborate your crown is, apparently you are good at the game. Is this correct?

Crowns are seasonal rewards for doing well (completing lots of levels) during weekend tournaments. The more elaborate the crown the more active the player has been on weekends. They don't necessarily mean you are better at the game only that you play a lot during tournaments.
