What do items that are faded and light coloured mean? I noticed if I merge with another nothing happens, and then another light faded item appears. What do these do?

Faded items are locked tiles, you need to create the item that is in the faded tile and then merge that same item into it. This will give you the next item in the evolution line and unlock that same tile for future use.
