All of the items that I need to merge to make building supplies automatically go down into the storage box at the left-hand corner, but then I can’t find them anywhere. What is happening?

Click on the open box in the bottom left corner of the main screen. You should see, at the bottom of the pop up, a shell, a bucket & spade and a mallet.
Click on the bucket & spade to see your stored producers.
Click on the mallet to see your building supplies.
