How do you get the hand scanner to work in the grocery store level of Rooms and Exits?

I click the scanner from your bag press use then the scanner on the left of the screen goes to the centre and checks it, itself. Mind you it isn't working with the porridge oats

Use the pen on the oats and the scanner will work on it then.
