You have to wait for the story to prompt you to put in the key, then click the safe to show the lock. As I recall, after that, it’s drag and drop.

I don’t get a prompt to insert key, I move key to safes key slot and it goes back to available finds.If you are still looking for help with this game we have more questions and answers for you to check.
