Is there a way to locate hidden empty spaces?

Take any 1x1 object and use it to scan your island spaces. If it shines green, the space is empty/open; if it shines red, the space is occupied. You can also open your storage and select an object to place; the game will automatically place it on an open space, so you may find some hidden empty spaces that way.
