How do I unlock the box and get the axe out in the carnival scene? Tried several times to smash it open with the mallet. I'm at a stand still and will have to quit the game.

You have to break it with the mallet. Tap on the mallet. Then drag it from the inventory circle to the box. The center of the mallet (not the head of the mallet) should touch the center of the box. Good luck.
