I used to get compasses at fairly regular intervals. Now they don’t come very often at all. Is there a way to increase the number you get, for example if you have a lot of open land will you not get as many?

Try buying more decoration with highest flower value. This will allow your game to progress, without running out of space, and you'll find compasses will come more readily.
