I had the required diamonds and compasses for expansion unlock, but I pressed the link and nothing happened. When I go to the clouded areas, it says expansion unreachable. Help?

Sounds like a glitch. Once you spend diamonds to pay for the compasses you still lack, it should open up that one plot. If that did not happen, contact customer support through the "help" button and provide your game user ID which is written below the "help" button.
