Do higher prizes subsume lower prizes in competitions? For example, if the first prize is three 5-star boxes, and the third prize is four compasses; does it mean that opening these very three 5-star boxes will yield four compasses at least (plus other goodies)?

No. Three 5-star boxes will just give you the usual odds and opportunities for those boxes, nothing more.
