They are using Bulletin Board Code with hex color codes. For example, if you type the following but remove the asterisk, you will get "my text" written in red:
<color=#FF0000>my text</color>
Some common color codes:
Red #FF0000
White #FFFFFF
Gray #808080
Black #000000
Maroon #800000
Yellow #FFFF00
Olive #808000
Lime #00FF00
Green #008000
Aqua #00FFFF
Teal #008080
Blue #0000FF
Navy #000080
Fuchsia #FF00FF
Purple #800080

Type the “(“ as < and “)” as >
Then hit “send” and your text will show up in color.

Italics text must be sandwiched between (i) and (/i) and bold text sandwiched between (b) and (/b) but use < and > instead of "(" and ")".Message will show the change after you "send" the message with the code instructions.
