That is your level. It increases as you meet the flower requirements and corresponds to the scenes you can open and play.

Did you perhaps purchase an avatar with your tip tokens? Try tapping on your profile picture, then tap on the pencil next to your picture to look at the avatars list. There is no cost to changing avatars.

There is a number in the character icon. For example, I have the June portrait and the number 152 is in it. What does this mean?

Oh, that is your level. If you are on level 152, you can open scenes up to #152. When the Help Wanted cases tell you to level up, that is the number you must increase by 1 by adding flowers. Right now, the maximum level is 1050 (although scenes are not yet available to play),
