Do all coin-producing buildings have to go thru the 5-step upgrade process? Some of the buildings look hideous after upgrading and many don't fit with the theme of a quaint island. I know I could just not click on the arrow that indicates an upgrade but then that arrow inside the white status bubble above the building would be in the way.

It is not necessary to complete the upgrades. But you will lose out on some Flowers, and the upgrade arrow will continue to display above it.
