How are the portraits in the cafe used? What are the benefits of purchasing them?

The portraits are added to the list of avatars you can choose from. They give no game benefit, except that non-Facebook friends can distinguish you from other similar players. To see your list of avatars, tap on your profile picture and select the pencil next to your picture. There you can also decide if you want Facebook friends to see your avatar or you FB profile picture.
