To beat your own score, you must play faster. Tapping objects in the order they are written left to right may also help. You will get 10 extra coins if you get a "perfect" score, which means no hints, no misses, and no lapse of the bonus bar. Other than that, beating your score does not give you much, if any, reward. Suitcases rewards are random. Earning the top spot on the leaderboard (wearing the red hat) does not give you any reward, just bragging rights.

When I try and get the "Beat your own score" reward, I would deliberately play badly one round (pressing randomly and letting the bonus bar run out) and then get a perfect the round after that. It doesn't work. The only time I beat my own score is at the very beginning of a chapter before I earn the second clue.

That is correct; you must beat your existing score that is on the board for that scene, not just the last score you received. To complete the Help Wanted task that asks you to beat your own score, it is easiest when you start a new scene. If you have no new scenes available, try going back to the beginning of the game. Some players will purposely not fill all their 4th or 5th stars so they can complete this case.
