What happens when you open all 4 islands and what happens then with your compasses? Why still earn.

You wait for the next island. Compasses are automatically saved up for the 5th island, which is scheduled to be released early 2021.

Were we supposed to know all this info about the compasses and the island?

It is not explained in the game. Info is gathered from Wooga game representatives on the Facebook groups such as Orchid Social: Hints and Tips.
