To proceed thru the game or to proceed significantly faster thru the game, is it necessary to be online to participate in competitions, be in clubs, etc? A lot of the questions in here seem to focus on the "extra stuff".

Being in a club that shares coffee energy daily is a huge advantage. Being in club competitions could go either way; it could give you rewards to help with the game, or it could drain your energy resources so that you can't play the regular game as much. There are many ways to play the game; it's all up to you.
