Technically, you "use" materials rather than "spend" them.

There are only two ways to do this.

1. Use materials to construct or upgrade a building.

2. Send Jack on an airplane errand to exchange building materials for other items of value, typically coins, flowers, or diamonds.

You can't use material to upgrade a building ... And now Jack on plane is just using a few material and so it blocks you in the game as you need to find material to continue and if you have too much of it it wont give it to you .... This game is becoming really boring as it goes ... They block you with not letting you advance .... The designer are not so good at this ... We should be able to spend and find more as you play ... You can play an hour without finding even 4 of it ...

I 100% agree! They have really screwed this game up. And why does it take 5 months to renovate the lighthouse.

Landmarks are designed to give flowers on a daily basis without taking up island space. It's not a race to finish. Other landmarks will take 6-7 months. I am grateful for the flowers, as it was not always available when developers did not have next landmarks ready. Now it is constant.

As for Jack's delivery, you need to keep it balanced and not let the materials reach maximum 999. It takes some strategy to make sure it stays balanced.

At 999 you just can’t collect any more of that type of material. You’ll need to use some up (eg send Jack on a mission that requires that material) before you can start collecting that item again.

Agree that the ads are a constant nuisance. It was great when ad block worked on them, but not any more. On the pc, you can sometimes click on the ad, then exit immediately for the reward.

While the video ad is playing, I like to study my next Secrets and Sweep the Board scenes on another browser or device. Make the best of my time.

I do that during ads, too. Also just a good time for a mini-meditation: close my eyes and take deep breaths.

The only ways to spend materials is to upgrade 3x3 buildings and to send Jack on a delivery. Tap on the buildings or Jack's hangar to see your options. After all your buildings have completed all upgrades, you must send Jack on a delivery as often as you can to keep the materials from maxing out at 999, after which you will no longer receive any more materials.
