Access your storage either through the storage boat on the bottom right of you island or holding down anywhere on your island until the arrow fills up. Once in the storage, tap on the item to select it. Make sure you move it to a completely open space which will appear green (instead of red). Then tap on the island to accept the placement.

Dig icon is only for permanently removing gifted bushes or dead trees and rocks. If you want to place things in storage, tap on a decoration and then select the yellow button with the box icon. Only things that cannot be stored are 3x3 buildings, 4x4 Estate, landmarks, Jack's hangar, and gift bushes,Search for more answers for June's Journey - Hidden Object or ask your own here.
