How do you change to an appropriate gun when you get a new mission?

How do you change to an appropriate gun when you get a new mission? Mission 339 consists of 2 bad guys standing across the street from a building that’s filled with explosives and hostages. But the game auto-selects the DP64 (grenade launcher?) which causes the building to explode thru sympathetic detonation, even from 100 yards away. When I change guns the game just ignores the change.
