How do I get more survivors in the last autumn? I've got 12... but would love to be able to have more... please help

That is the point of the last Autumn. You need to use the survivors you have wisely. Work out what resources you need and move them to that production.

Do the heros from the event go back into regular play, I'm stuck in regular play because the heros I need are in the event game play.
