The game has said about magical stones and has taken me to the map then it refuses to do anything else..

Have you moved on to the second city? you might need to do that. If you have then I think that's when you should start the campaign mode of battling creatures with your heroes. You might need to unlock heroes first through opening the card boxes. If its not letting you do anything try restarting the app.
