Gems are the premium currency in Clash of Clans. This means that the primary way to get them is to pay for them using real money. However, there are a number of ways that you can get Gems for free, which you will discover in this section of the guide. Gems are generally used for speeding up production times so that you don't have to spend an age waiting for things to complete or upgrade.
The best way to get Gems for free is to complete the achievements that are on offer in the game. The higher the level of the achievement, the more Gems you will get. Keep an eye on the list of achievements and try to aim to complete some of them rather than just playing aimlessly. You can also get Gems when clearing away things like rocks and trees around your base, those these are not given that often.
You begin the game with quite a few Gems - and you should try to save them to purchase more Builders Huts. You can purchase a Shield with them too, in addition to the aforementioned role of speeding up construction and upgrade wait times.
