Can you cut only part of a tree?

Yes, you can with planning your energy burn. As an example, if a tree takes 80 energy to cut completely, then burn your energy down to 25, 20, 15, whatever you want then go cut the tree. When cutting the tree (or any big item in this manner) you can work on it in little bits at a time.
