How many families can you have?

How many families can you have? I have four and I’m trying to have more but it says, "You need to unlock a family"

I am not one hundred percent sure, but In chests, you can get these things that show like 2/6 below a wolf with a cub. I think this shows how many separate families you can make. My guess is that you only got 4/6...?.? Although I am not sure, just a theory, I am guessing.
