Why can’t I ever get any of the things in the chest but elixir?

It's done that to me a few times but I think it is because like let's say it gave you a hat, and the animal wearing the hat was a horse, that means if you get the horse animal, you can use it on that. I'm pretty sure that is how it works, but I could be wrong.
