I accidentally pressed the 'start a new family' option and have now lost one of my wolf family . Is it possible to bring him back into my original family? I’m gutted !

Unfortunately no, you can't. I made the same mistake.

If you go and sleep in your den with your mate, you can have another cub to replace him. I had to do this, so I gave him the same name and skin as the wolf I lost.

Wait, you lose your whole family after you start a new one? I'm not doin that. I finally reached lv 53!.

How did you do it

Once you get a pup to lvl 50 or higher you can go the family tree and click on it, you don't lose the animal but you do start a family with that pup that you just started a new family with. You still have the family of the old and new pup.
