How do I save the game or does it auto save to checkpoints? If so, where are they? Because I have traveled very far and then it just brings me back to the forests.

You know the question marks on the map? Those are dens. When you go in a den a button will appear on the bottom of the screen. Press it and it will activate the den, which means that when you shut off the game you will spawn back in that den.
