In the mines: if I defeat someone who has been mining for hours, why does my number of gems stay unchanged?

You may be looking at how much your gathering instead of gem amount in the top right corner. It will go up, just look at it again. Mind you, you wont recover all of the gems that your opponent has mined. Only a small portion.
