What are the training points that you get from getting rid of duplicate characters?

These are actually used to upgrade your heros perks, not their stars or actual level, just perks

How? Which screen? can it happen on any color?

select the hero, in the little squares in the skills, click them and improve them

They are used to add the Hero’s stars, allowing you to increase their levels to the next limit.
