How are upper tier star levels increased by going to the tavern?

How are upper tier star levels increased by going to the tavern? What is needed? What do I need to do concerning these?

I just discovered this, but haven’t tried it yet… Bring up your heroes list, click DISCHARGE and select the duplicate cards. Discharging them earns points for the heroes selected, which are used to add stars to them. Adding stars allows you to upgrade them to the next limit.

Click on a hero. On the right, under the hat, is a faded star. Click on that. Every duplicate hero you get gives you progress against stars.
