There are five elements during a race where you will be actively required to intervene, using your skill at the game to either aid or hinder your race progress. These are looked at in detail below.

Pit Stops

Pit Stops are required at least once every race, to change tires on your car. By driving cautiously, or even in a balanced fashion, you should be able to get through a 25-lap race with just the one stop. If you choose to be aggressive, however, your fuel will run down and you are very likely to require a second stop. A good time for a pit stop is under 6 seconds. You perform the necessary action to complete the stop by tapping on the blue highlighted nuts on your car's wheel. First, to remove the wheel, and again, to tighten the new one.

Generally the quickest stops are when you are tapping as fast as you can with one finger. You may be tempted to use two, but this runs the risk of not actually selecting anything, causing a much slower time.

Racing Moves

If your pit stop is too slow, you will lose more places in the race.

Note: Pit-stop performance cannot be enhanced by anything other than improving your own reaction times.

Overtakes

Overtakes are reasonably easy to pull off assuming there are not too many other cars on the road at the same time as you. Tilt your device to steer your car around the vehicles in front, while navigating the corner at the same time. If you touch the car or the barriers, you will crash. Note that you can go up onto the grass without losing any time, and once you are passed the car, you can hit anything you like with no penalty.

Key things to remember are that if you try to overtake by going too far round the outside of the other car you will probably go too slowly to complete the pass. Also, should there be another car on the corner, make sure you avoid that one as carefully as you can. The best line to take through the corner is to go as tight as you can on the apex of the turn.

The net result of a successful overtaking move is that you will gain a place. Should your move fail, you will lose at least one, and possibly more.

Slipstreaming

For slipstreaming, you must wait until your car is just close enough to the one in front, before swiping left or right on the screen to send it zooming around the outside. There is a prompt on screen to tell you it's too early, but once that goes you still need to wait for the right time before doing it. If you leave it too late, your car will hit the back of the one in front. Do it too early and you won't crash, but your car won't have the speed to be able to overtake successfully.

Sometimes the game struggles to maintain a consistent framerate during the slipstreaming action. In these cases, you are safer to attempt to complete the move earlier so that if it does fail, at least you won't crash.

If you complete the slipstream, you will gain a place. Fail and you will either remain where you are, if you avoided contact with other vehicles, or crash and fall back at least one place.

Racing Moves

Blocks

Blocks are a defensive move. You need to swipe left or right, based on whichever direction the car behind you appears to be going, to move your car in front of them and attempt to block them off. As you get into harder championships, the other cars will feint in one direction, so be aware of this and wait as late as you can to pick left or right.

If you leave it too late, you will ram the other car and cause a crash. If you go too early, they will see what you have done and go the other way.

If you fail the block, you will lose a place, but if you crash while doing so, you may lose many more. A successful block will end with you holding the place and being able to push on and catch other cars.

Avoid

You are required to Avoid when you come across a pile-up of other cars - a crash, basically. The difficulty of this varies greatly depending on how many cars are involved in the accident. Your task is to draw a line on the screen, plotting the route through the gaps in the cars. You have to make sure that you allow enough space to make any sharp turns. The better your car's handling is, the more likely it will be able to thread through any difficult games.

Racing Moves

If you fail this, you will join the crash and lose numerous places. Pass the pile-up successfully, however, and you will emerge having leapfrogged any of the vehicles involved.
