I have huge amounts of coins built up, because apparently there is no store to spend them in. During one game I was offered a power up that neutralized one of the grannies. I had never seen it before or since. Is there a way I can buy more of this particular power up?

I believe that you’re talking about the ufo+ button in the lower right corner that allows you to choose which granny who is then abducted by aliens. To the best of my knowledge, that is only available within the school bus levels.
