Can I turn off the sounds / music?

Yes, go to the main screen (if you are in a game then tap the up arrow at the bottom and then select the lines icon on the left of the menu that appears).
From the main screen tap the cog icon in the lower right and then you can tap the Speaker or musical note icons to toggle the game sounds and music on and off.
