I'm stuck in the fortress and need to get the lamp post to finish it. How do I get it?

Very simple. Build 2 level 6 lamps. Merge them. Ignore the text that says no more mergers can be made. You will get your level 7 lamp.

I've tried to merge two of the level 6 lamps but they won't merge, they bounce off of each other...... what can I do to merge them?
