Can I merge the items at the main page with the items in the basement? How?

Yes, you can. If you have a free space in your basement, you can move the object you want to merge to the stairs. This will move them to the basement, where you can merge them with something in the basement.
To merge something from the basement with something on the main space you will have to do the same, only now you will need a free space on the main page.
