Have a friend that is way behind me in villages but is ahead on leader board. Why?

They are ahead of you because they are buying chest and getting new cards, and each card adds stars which is your level meter... also check on your pets each time you upgrade your pet you get a bunch of stars as well, again the number of stars is your level meter.
