Are the orange alphas all the same?

No. They still fall into the develop or the combat category with each having its own skill set. Within the combat alpha category there is melee, ranged and support sub categories decreeing the preferred function of each alpha. The skills throughout the entire alpha library remain fairly consistent within the categories of combat, support or develop and further within their preferred species sub category ie; herbivore, carnivore omnivore and universal. Certain skills in each combat alpha are geared towards the alphas melee, ranged or support function. I hope this helps.
