In level 8 of the challenges I can't get the key free is there a way to get rid of the black rings?

To release the key, you simply have to swing each of the two strands to be outside the base of the key strand and then drop the free end in an empty spot in the same column. As long as the one strand is not crossing the key strand, it will retract and be gone.
