Survive! Mola-Mola

As children we’ve always wanted a pet to own and raise. Sometimes, however, most parents are against it—especially if the pet you want to take care of is a giant sea creature called Mola Mola. But fret no more since now nurturing a dominating creature like the Mola Mola is now possible with the pet nurturing game Survive! Mola Mola!

Released in September 2014 by Select Button Inc. Survive! Mola Mola is a pet simulator that can be downloaded for free on Android and iOS. The game has In-app purchases that allow you to purchase the game's currency of sorts; Mola Points. Ads are also present in this game--one is a full screen ad that can be easily closed and the other occupies the bottom of the screen in a non-intrusive way.

The objective of the game is as you may have guessed from the title "Survive! Mola Mola",which is to survive and making your mola mola the biggest fish in the ocean. The catch is, though, is your Mola Mola is one extremely fragile creature. You don't really do much aside from feeding him and sending him off to random adventures. However, each of the things you make him do may kill him. Even the food he eats may kill him randomly. It's a good thing though that evolution helps you in a way of giving him increased resistance to dying from that particular thing that killed him.

For example, when you unlock new food types, in this case, a sardine, the sardine's bones may rupture his weak organs resulting in an infection, followed by his death. Quite gruesome in my opinion. It isn't so bad though because like previously stated, evolution kicks in and gives you resistance to that particular accident later on. And in this case, that incident gives you a 99.9% survival rate from eating a sardine for your next Mola Mola. It isn't perfect and if you are unlucky, another sardine could go and kill you again.

You can also send your beloved pet off to random adventures but doing so is much more dangerous than just feeding him. These adventures start with a 50% chance of succeeding. Which is good but failing at the adventure increases your survivability from 50%, to 75%, to 95% up to a maximum of 99%. Successfully completing an adventure or leveling up / evolving or dying gives you Mola Points or MP (the amount of Mola Points you get when you die depends on your rank and weight at the time of death). These points, like previously mentioned, is the currency in this game and is used to unlock more adventures, food types, and increase the rate at which food replenishes. The higher level adventures give you more Mola Points upon completion while the better food types help grow your sunfish faster. All these help you in accomplishing the Mr.Sunfish's goal to be the biggest sunfish that survives everything in his journey. One of the main things to look forward to in this game is the humor. It is somehow funny yet sad to see Mr.Sunfish get killed from his various accidents though. Like having bad eyesight and running into something which is most likely to happen very early in the game or jumping out of the water to get rid of parasites only to get killed on the way down by the water's impact. But despite the morbid scenarios, you can't help but giggle when reading your Mola Mola’s witty death descriptions. Have fun collecting every one of his death scenarios.

The graphics consist of two dimensional, 16bit graphics for everything. Giving the game a retro feel akin to the likes of Pokemon. The illustrations are also well drawn even if it is following an 16bit design. Quite pleasant to look at if you ask me. The sound in the game is really nice too especially the familiar level up sound. The background music is really catchy too. The music when you are in the normal feeding mode is really fun to listen to. It has a strangely fitting sound for oceanic activities which is similar to the Surf music in Pokemon.

In conclusion, Survive! Mola Mola is a funny game you play most likely while doing other things. This game does not go to the extent other games go to in which you wait for days on end to continue playing. You just leave it for a few seconds to make the food replenish and then feed your Mola. Even leaving the music on is quite relaxing. If you want to try living in the shoes (or in this case fins) of a fish that is, quoting from the game's description; "living a fish's life in hard mode", then you should give this game a try. Perhaps try this game out for its rather funny comments, colorful descriptions and witty outcomes.
