At the beginning, the best way to get resources fast it to watch the video ads! It's a bit of a hassle, but it is faster than grinding through the map.

Also don't forget to start and upgrade your mines, this will bring in a constant stream of wood and other resources.

Upgrade your spade and crowbar too, this will allow you to break things and get the resources quicker.

I did the investment of spending actual money on removing the adds for a year. It really helps getting the resources to grow. Without i would have given up already.Grinding is just so much fun... collecting without adds makes you grow at least ten times as fast.
