When to merge dice?

From my experience with the game, it's generally best to not merge dice until you have a more or less complete board, then just merge to make space for a new dice to arrive.

The author explains in detail the mechanics of merging dice in Random Dice. And from it I think it is best to not merge until you need to find a space or prefer a different type of dice, but instead fill your board with dice and use the power up feature.
