It depends on the level. For some you need copies of the same hero, duplicates. at other levels you can use heroes of the same faction.

I'd like to ascend Mathew with two Barrons, but one of the Barrons is 'locked' and I apparently can't use it to ascend Matthew. Why is he locked and can I unlock him? I've reset him but it didnt change anything
