You can get gems by completing things in the to do list. You don't get so many at first, but they do add up, and the rewards can be bigger as you get further into the game.

The to do list can be found in the bottom right of the main game screen.

The best way to get substantial diamonds is to join the growth fund -$15 you get get more as you reach higher levels without paying more. and the piggy bank about $2.99 when it is full. The game play only gets you abou 5 at a time. You can get 10 daily for free.
