Does the silencer add anything to your chance of success?

I hear a lot of silenced fire. So say it increases weapon power, some say increases gear rating, some say it does nothing except make your shots quieter up close. Also on the DOAHunter it costs 14,000 diamonds for level 1. How many levels of silencer upgrades is there? Any feedback

Not sure if I'm correct but I thought when playing PVP, if you are shot by somebody with a silencer, you do not see their exact location before the countdown screen. Just my guess as this happens now and again and it's really annoying.
